Jairo Fernandez

Jairo Fernandez was named SVP, Human Resources for SAP Asia Pacific Japan in April 2013. Based in Singapore, Fernandez is responsible for the overall human resource management across the region to support SAP's accelerated growth. 

As VP of Human Resources for SAP Latin America since 2009, Fernandez led his team in delivering outstanding results through innovative programs in talent attraction, leadership and diversity. Fernandez's leadership drove high levels of employee engagement and generated a competitive advantage for SAP in the region. Fernandez was thrice named in the Excellence in Human Resources Awards of the South Florida Business Journal, in 2008, 2010 and 2011, among other awards. 

Prior to SAP, Fernandez held roles spanning human resources, sales and marketing at technology companies, with global experience at Neoris as Chief Human Capital Officer & Chief Marketing Officer, and at Unisys as Global Talent and Business Effectiveness Director, after managing human resources and marketing in Colombia, then Latin America. 

Fernandez is passionate about the digital economy and its implications for the workforce. A digital leader, Fernandez advises various organizations and SAP Customers on how to prepare for the future. Credited with bringing technological advances to HR , Fernandez has been instrumental in improving employee experience with the HR function and managing workforce through predictive insights. A regular contributor to top publications in APJ region, Fernandez was recently recognized as 'HR professional of the Year' by at HR excellence awards Asia and Top 30 HR professional in South East Asia by HRD Singapore magazine

Jay has been the lead in several recruitment initiatives for IT products & services organizations including Leadership hiring, Campus hiring, Volume hiring (up to 1000 offers per month), quick ramp-ups, and hiring for SMEs. He was instrumental in implementing industry-first best practices to check candidate impersonation and led global rollouts of automation/e-recruitment tools/ATS including scalable processes and procedural frameworks.

There is growing concern among CEOs about finding and keeping the best talent to achieve Business growth plans. Different surveys show that in 2014, 36% of global employers reported talent shortages, in a more recent 2015 survey, 73% of CEOs reported being concerned about the availability of key skills.

In a war of talent, employer branding is a powerful tool.

Look at how you're hiring: think candidate experience. Do you force job seekers through a maze-like microsite for career opportunities, then fail to acknowledge their applications with an email or letter (approximately 70% of hiring companies are in this camp)? Do you put people through tests and five phone screens, then never follow up?

Then look at the employee experience – What employees do everyday, the actions they take, and how they perceive the actions of their managers and top management. There have been enough studies that have reported that on an average only 30% of the employees are engaged. The remaining are partly engaged or disengaged.

How does this impact our ability to attract and retain people?

Today our thoughts, experiences are not private, anymore. We cannot ignore that online media and social networking is changing the employment landscape in many subtle but fundamental ways. Our ability to enhance employee/ candidate experience and leverage social media would go a long way in establishing employer brand.
